Dalhousie

Dalhousie is a quiet colonial hill town at about 1,970 metres in Chamba district, spread across five hills with churches, deodar walks and views to the Pir Panjal. Most people stay one to two nights and use it as the base for Khajjiar, 22 km away.

What there is to do

Dalhousie is a walking town rather than a sightseeing one. Garam Sadak and Thandi Sadak circle the hill at different exposures, St John’s and St Francis churches date from the 1860s, and Panchpula and Satdhara are short drives. Nobody comes here for a packed itinerary.

Khajjiar

A saucer-shaped meadow ringed by deodar at about 1,950 m, 22 km away and marketed as "mini Switzerland". It is genuinely striking early in the day and genuinely crowded by midday. Going first thing is the whole difference.

Chamba

An hour and a half further down, with the Lakshmi Narayan temple group and the Bhuri Singh museum. It is the cultural stop of this circuit and is skipped by most short itineraries, which is a reasonable trade if you only have two days.

Questions people ask

How far is Khajjiar from Dalhousie?

About 22 km, roughly an hour by road through deodar forest. Most visitors do it as a half day from Dalhousie rather than staying overnight at Khajjiar itself.

Is one day enough for Dalhousie?

One night is workable if you are passing through to Dharamshala. Two nights lets you walk the circular roads properly and take Khajjiar slowly rather than at midday with everyone else.

Does Dalhousie get snow?

Yes, usually in January and February, though less reliably than Shimla or Manali. Roads to Khajjiar can close briefly after heavy falls.
