Dharamshala is two towns: the lower administrative town and McLeodganj about 9 km above it at roughly 2,080 metres, which is where the Dalai Lama’s residence and most visitors are. Two days covers the monastery, Bhagsu waterfall and Triund’s lower trail. It pairs naturally with Dalhousie and Amritsar.

McLeodganj against lower Dharamshala
Almost everything a visitor wants is in McLeodganj: the Tsuglagkhang complex, the cafés, the Bhagsu and Dharamkot walks. Lower Dharamshala has the bus stand, the stadium and the government offices. Book in McLeodganj unless there is a specific reason not to.
The Triund trek
About 9 km from Galu Devi temple, climbing to roughly 2,850 m with the Dhauladhar wall directly above the ridge. It is a long day walk rather than a technical trek, and it can be done as an overnight camp. Weather turns fast on the ridge; the descent in rain is the part people underestimate.
Pairing it with Dalhousie and Amritsar
The common circuit runs Amritsar, Dalhousie, Khajjiar, then Dharamshala, using Amritsar as the arrival and departure point. It works because the road distances are moderate and the four places are genuinely different from one another.

Is Dharamshala the same as McLeodganj?
Not quite. McLeodganj is the upper town about 9 km above Dharamshala, and it is where the Tibetan community, the Dalai Lama’s residence and most hotels for visitors are. When a tour says Dharamshala it usually means McLeodganj.
How hard is the Triund trek?
Moderate. About 9 km one way with a steady climb and one steep final section. Reasonably fit walkers manage it in four to five hours up. It needs proper shoes rather than technical gear.
Can you meet the Dalai Lama in Dharamshala?
Public teachings are held at the Tsuglagkhang complex on announced dates and are open to registered attendees. Private audiences are not something a tour can arrange. Check the official schedule before planning a trip around it.
