Dalhousie is about 80 km from Pathankot, roughly three hours by road, and Pathankot is the nearest railhead and practical airport. Most itineraries arrive at Amritsar, spend a night there, and drive up the following morning.

Through Amritsar
Amritsar has the better flight and train connections and gives you the Golden Temple and the Wagah border on the way. That is why most Dalhousie itineraries start and finish there rather than at Pathankot.
