Getting there
How to reach Srinagar
Srinagar has an airport with direct flights from Delhi and other major cities, which is how most visitors arrive. By road it is about 260 km from Jammu on NH44, seven to eight hours, and the railhead at Banihal connects onward to the valley.

The Jammu road
NH44 through the Chenab valley and the Jawahar tunnel is the land route into the valley. It closes occasionally for weather or maintenance, so tight same-day connections onward from Jammu are worth avoiding.
Questions people ask
Is there a train to Srinagar?
The valley line runs within Kashmir, and connectivity from the rest of the network has been extended in stages. Most visitors still fly, and tours are built around the airport rather than the railway.

- Srinagar travel guideSrinagar sits at about 1,585 metres on Dal Lake and is the arrival point for almost every Kashmir itinerary. A houseboat night, a shikara ride and the Mughal gardens fill two days, after which most trips move on to Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg.
- Best time to visit KashmirApril to October covers Kashmir’s green season, with tulips in April, gardens through summer and clear valleys into autumn. December to February brings snow to Gulmarg and the ski season. Each is a genuinely different trip rather than a better or worse one.
- How to reach GulmargGulmarg is about 50 km from Srinagar, roughly two hours by road through Tangmarg. There is no airport or railhead at Gulmarg itself, so every visit runs through Srinagar. In heavy snow the final climb from Tangmarg may need a local vehicle with chains.
- Sonmarg travel guideSonmarg lies at about 2,730 metres on the Sindh river, the last Kashmir valley before the Zoji La pass to Ladakh. Thajiwas glacier is the main excursion, reached on foot or by pony. It is usually a day trip from Srinagar or a stop on the drive to Leh.
