Why the passes decide everything
Ladakh’s season is set by Zoji La from Srinagar and Baralacha and Tanglang La from Manali. Until they clear, overland trips cannot run, and once they close the region is air-access only. That is why almost every Ladakh itinerary sits between late May and September.
Winter Ladakh
Flying in during January or February is possible and gives the frozen landscape and the Chadar trek season, but Nubra and Pangong become difficult or closed and the cold is severe. It is a specialist trip.
Questions people ask
When do the roads to Leh open?
Generally from around late May, once snow clearance on Zoji La and the Manali passes is complete. Both usually close again through October. Dates move each year.
Is July a good time for Ladakh?
Yes — it is the most reliable month for open passes and accessible lakes. It is also the busiest, and the Manali side can see monsoon-related delays on the approach before you reach the dry zone.

- Leh travel guideLeh sits at about 3,500 metres and is the base for all of Ladakh. Two full days of rest on arrival are not optional if you fly in, because everything else in the region is higher. - Pangong Tso travel guidePangong Tso is a 134 km saline lake at about 4,350 metres, of which roughly a third lies in India and the rest in Tibet. It is four to five hours from Leh via Chang La. Staying one night at Spangmik is what makes the trip worthwhile, because the colour changes through the day.
- How to reach LehLeh has direct flights from Delhi year-round, about ninety minutes. Overland, it is roughly 470 km from Manali and 420 km from Srinagar, both taking two days and both open only from around late May to October. Flying in means two full days of rest before going higher.
- Ladakh bike trip guideLadakh bike trips run from late May to September, when Baralacha La and Tanglang La on the Manali road and Zoji La on the Srinagar road are clear. A standard circuit is eleven to fourteen days from Manali, with a backup vehicle carrying luggage, fuel and spares.
