Shimla
Shimla sits at about 2,200 metres in Himachal Pradesh and works as a year-round hill station, with snow between late December and February. Two to three days covers the Ridge, Mall Road, Christ Church, Kufri and Jakhoo temple. Most itineraries pair it with Manali rather than visiting alone.

What Shimla is actually like
The colonial core is walkable and closed to traffic: the Ridge and Mall Road run along a spine with Christ Church at one end. Below that the town falls away steeply in tiers, which is why hotel photographs and hotel walks are two different experiences. Ask where a hotel sits relative to the lift before booking.
Kufri, Naldehra and Mashobra
Kufri is 16 km out and is where most day trips go for snow and horse rides; it is crowded in season and the horses are the main complaint people return with. Naldehra has the golf course and quieter deodar, and Mashobra is the calmer base if you want Shimla without the Mall.
The Kalka–Shimla toy train
A UNESCO-listed narrow gauge line climbing from Kalka through 100-odd tunnels. It takes about five hours against two and a half by road, so it is a thing you do for its own sake rather than to save time. Book well ahead in season.
Questions people ask
How many days are enough for Shimla?
Two to three days. That covers the Ridge, Mall Road, Jakhoo temple and a half day at Kufri, without rushing. Adding Manali afterwards is the usual pattern and needs another three to four days.
Does it snow in Shimla?
Usually between late December and February. Snowfall is not guaranteed on any given date, and roads to Kufri can close briefly after heavy falls. If snow is the point of the trip, January is the safer bet than December.
Is Shimla suitable for elderly travellers?
Yes, with planning. The Mall and the Ridge are level, but almost everything else involves steep gradients, and many hotels are reached by steps. Tell the helpline if mobility matters and the hotel is chosen for access rather than for the view.
