Himachal from Mumbai
From Mumbai, the practical route to Himachal is a flight to Delhi or Chandigarh and a road transfer from there — about four hours to Shimla or nine to Manali. Rail from Mumbai takes roughly a day and a half each way, which is why most travellers from the west coast fly.

Chandigarh over Delhi
Flying into Chandigarh removes four to five hours of road at the start and end of the trip. It is worth checking even if the fare is slightly higher, because those hours come out of the holiday rather than out of the budget.

- How to reach ShimlaShimla is about 115 km from Chandigarh, roughly three to four hours by road on NH5. The nearest major airport is Chandigarh; Shimla’s own airport at Jubbarhatti has limited service. The Kalka–Shimla toy train takes about five hours and is done for the ride rather than for speed.
- How to reach ManaliManali is about 250 km from Chandigarh, eight to nine hours by road, and roughly 50 km from Bhuntar airport at Kullu. Most travellers arrive on an overnight coach from Delhi or Chandigarh, or fly to Bhuntar and drive the last ninety minutes.
- Best time to visit Himachal PradeshMarch to June is the main season in Himachal, with clear weather and open passes. Late December to February brings snow to Shimla, Manali and Dalhousie. July to mid-September is monsoon, when landslides close hill roads without warning — it is the one window worth avoiding for a road-based trip.
- Family tour packages in the HimalayasShimla, Manali and Dharamshala suit families best, because the drives are short, hotels are plentiful and nothing depends on altitude tolerance. Ladakh and Spiti are not recommended for young children or grandparents, since both involve sustained time above 3,500 metres.
